Event Dates: 6/27/2009 -
8/18/2009
Reception: 6/27/2009 6-7 pm
The William D. Cannon Art Gallery presents The 2009 Cannon Invitational, an exhibition featuring the work of Joseph Bennett, David Fobes, Tara Smith and Duke Windsor. These four artists were selected by the Gallerys Curator of Exhibitions, Karen McGuire, from the 26 artists featured in The 2009 Juried Biennial exhibition. While each artist in the Juried Biennial only presents one or two works, the Invitational provides an opportunity to showcase selected Biennial artists and to present their work in greater depth. This lively exhibition, a unique amalgamation of the work of four San Diego County artists, combines various disciplines and areas of interest, presenting assemblage, painting, and sculptural-type objects made from unusual materials. The exhibition opens June 28 and continues through August 18 at the William D. Cannon Art Gallery in the Carlsbad City Library Complex, 1775 Dove Lane at El Camino Real.
The paintings of San Diego artist Duke Windsor are evocative of the great tradition of landscape painting, but with a decidedly contemporary twist the urban San Diego alleyway. Balancing between realist and painterly styles, Windsor creates the illusion of space by providing subtle and effective indicators of what the viewer expects to see and takes for granted in the depths of the familiar streetscapes of the city.
It is open to the public Tuesdays through Sundays. For information on all Gallery programs, contact the William D. Cannon Gallery (760) 602-2021 or the City of Carlsbad website, www.carlsbadca.gov/arts.
