ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY:
Born in Texas, Duke Windsor served as a U.S. Marine Corps combat illustrator and drill instructor. He studied classical voice at San Diego State University, later performing with the San Diego Opera Chorus, and he studied fashion design at La Mesa College. Duke has also worked as a technical and graphic illustrator, architectural draftsman and editorial cartoonist, and he has been an actor, bull rider and holds the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt. In 1991, Duke opened his first fine art studio in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
Currently, Duke paints representational urban scenes as well as plein air landscapes and wildlife. He continues to produce commissioned and historical pieces in a variety of media including oils, acrylic, watercolor and linocut. Duke’s paintings have been exhibited at numerous juried exhibitions, group shows and corporate venues in San Diego and Southern California, and they are held in many private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. Duke is also a published cartoon artist. He has taught children's drawing and cartoon art at the San Diego Museum of Art and adult art at the San Diego Art Department. He continues to write guitar music and to sing and perform locally.
In addition to painting, Duke’s professional career is museum exhibit design. He has worked as Exhibit Technician for the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Museum of Man and Mingei International Museum, all in San Diego. In 2006 Duke became Traveling Exhibits Designer for the San Diego Museum of Natural History where he designed the 2007 blockbuster Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition. In mid-2007 Duke assumed the position of Director of Exhibits and Lead Exhibit Designer for the USS Midway Museum San Diego harbor. Duke Windsor is represented by Sue Greenwood Fine Art of Laguna Beach, California. His work can also be seen at the Four Corners Gallery of Idyllwild, California.
